Assam Police’s campaign against child marriage continues for the third day, 2278 people arrested

Assam Police Crackdown On Child Marriage: Assam Police’s action against child marriage is going on continuously. Taking action on the third day on Sunday, the police arrested many people. With this, the number of people arrested under this campaign has increased to 2,278.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said on Saturday that the campaign against child marriage launched by the police will continue till the next assembly elections in 2026. It was criticized by opposition parties who termed the move as a “publicity stunt”.

4,074 FIRs registered across the state

At the same time, the police said in a statement that the arrests were made on the basis of 4,074 FIRs registered across the state. 139 people have been arrested in Biswanath, 130 in Barpeta and 126 in Dhubri. Other districts where more than 100 arrests have been made include Baksa (123), Bongaigaon and Hojai (117). In Dhubri, maximum number of FIRs were registered in 374 cases against child marriage. 255 such cases were registered in Hojai and 224 in Morigaon.

Owaisi raised questions on the action

On the other hand, questioning the intention behind this action, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said that if the Assam government really understands the problem of child marriage, it should have focused on increasing the literacy level. He alleged, “Experts have said that if you want to stop child marriage, you will have to open many schools, but the BJP government did not do this. You have also closed madrassas which were imparting education in some form or the other.

Assam Pradesh Congress President Bhupen Bora said that a humane approach is needed to deal with the issue. We are against child marriage, but what would be the use of disrupting families with older children? This is nothing but a publicity stunt.
