DRI seizes foreign cigarettes worth Rs 17 crore from Gujarat port, three arrested


Foreign Cigarettes Consignment: The Directorate of Intelligence Revenue (DRI) has arrested three people, including the managing director of a shipping company, in connection with the illegal import of foreign brand filter cigarettes worth about Rs 17 crore. An official of the investigating agency gave this information on Saturday.


The DRI said in a statement that its Ahmedabad divisional unit on April 1 at Mundra port in Gujarat’s Kutch district seized a container containing 84 lakh cigarettes of a foreign brand named ‘BBM Pride Filter Kings’ smuggled in.

Supply from United Arab Emirates

The consignment of cigarettes worth Rs 16.8 crore market value was imported from UAE in a container declared as hotel supplies, bed sheets and pillow covers, the statement said. It was confiscated under the Customs Act, 1962.
