Presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s ACNAP-EuroHeartCare Congress-2022 (ACNAP-EuroHeartCare Congress 2022) Study It has been claimed in the diet that low glycemic index ie low GI diet helps heart patients to lose weight. The GI is a system to rank fatty foods based on their ability to raise blood sugar levels. High GI diet rapidly increases the amount of sugar in the blood. These include white bread, rice, potatoes and sweets.
Low GI diets are digested late, due to which the sugar level also increases slowly. These include apples, oranges, broccoli, beans and brown rice and oats etc. The GI ranking of meat and fish etc. has not been done, because they do not contain carbohydrates. Earlier studies have found that a high GI diet increases the risk of heart diseases and type-2 diabetes.
How did the study happen?
Recent studies suggest that a low GI diet helps in maintaining body mass index (BMI) balance. The study, which ran from 2016 to 2019, included 160 patients aged between 38 and 76 years. During this, one group was kept normal, while the other group was kept on a low GI diet for three months. After this, the BMI and body composition of the people of both the groups were measured, in which a large positive change was seen in the group consuming the low GI diet.

According to the author of this study and Dr. Jamol Uzokov of the Republican Specialized Scientific Practical Medical Center of Therapy and Medical Rehabilitation, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, “larger studies are needed to confirm the findings of this study. Our study indicates that emphasizing low-GI foods as part of a balance diet can help heart disease patients control their body weight and waistline.”
