How did the study happen?
During the research, rats were given high-fat food items as well as sugary drinks, which is equivalent to the human consumption of burgers, chips and fizzy (added gas) drinks. This diet is given to the rats till their weight does not exceed 25% of their original normal weight. Whereas 50 rats were given food as a control. After this, along with studying the embryos of mice, imaging techniques were also examined at 3, 6, 9 and 14 months after the birth of the child. These included scans such as echocardiogram and positron emission tomography (PET). Based on this, the genes, proteins and mitochondria of the children were analyzed.


What happened in the study
Researchers found that changes in cardiac metabolism in children largely depended on gender. The female fetus had 841 gene expression changes, while the male fetus had 764 gene expression changes. Only 10% of the modified genes were common in both sexes. Despite this, interestingly, disturbances in cardiac function were found in both male and female children born to obese mothers. However, there is a difference in the development of heart defects in both the sexes. Heart disturbances start earlier in male children, whereas in females the condition worsens with increasing age.
