Lifestyle Disease Diabetes affects not only our body, but also the brain. In a study, scientists have found that the age of the brain of people with type 2 diabetes grows about 26% faster than a healthy person. Or rather, the patient’s brain is aging rapidly. Not only this, the cognitive ability (ability to think and understand) of type-2 diabetes patients also decreases.
The results of this study have been published in the journal E-Life. published
How did the study happen?
For this study, brain scans and brain capacity of 20 thousand people in the age group of 50 years to 80 years were assessed. The results were compared to a meta-analysis of nearly 100 other studies. Their analysis showed that there is a negative effect on working memory and learning ability of a person with type 2 diabetes.
what the experts say
Routine clinical assessments to diagnose diabetes typically focus on blood sugar, insulin levels, and body mass percentage, according to Botond Antal, a doctoral student at Stony Brook University in the US. . However, the neurological effects of type 2 diabetes can manifest themselves many years before they are detected by standard measures.

What happened in the study
According to Lilianne Mujica-Parodi, director of the Computational Neurodiagnostics Lab, “Our findings suggest that type 2 diabetes and its progression may be associated with accelerated brain aging, due to compromised energy availability. This can lead to significant changes in brain structure and function.”

Mujika-Parodi added, “By the time diabetes is formally diagnosed, this damage has already happened, our results highlight the need for research into brain-based biomarkers for type 2 diabetes and treatment strategies. which specifically targets its neurocognitive effects.”
