WORLD THYROID AWARENESS DAY 2022 : Every year today (25 May) ‘World Thyroid Awareness Day’ is celebrated. The day is known to promote awareness and understanding of thyroid diseases, their symptoms, prevention and treatment. This day came into existence in the year 2008 on a proposal of the European Thyroid Association (ETA). According to a report by Public Health Update, globally it is estimated that more than 200 million people are suffering from thyroid disease and 50 percent of these cases are such that are undiagnosed.
Actually, a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck is called thyroid gland. It is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body. This gland produces hormones, which affect the body’s important functions and regulate metabolism. The most common types of thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism (abnormally decreased thyroid activity), hyperthyroidism (abnormally increased thyroid activity), thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), and thyroid cancer, and are often caused by iodine deficiency. Huh.
History of World Thyroid Awareness Day
May 25 was officially adopted as World Thyroid Day during an annual general meeting, before the European Thyroid Association (ETA) Congress in September 2007. The date of May 25 also marks ETA’s Foundation Day in 1965, so May 25 was chosen as a day dedicated to creating awareness about thyroid disorders.
Theme of World Thyroid Awareness Day
There is no different theme for ‘World Thyroid Day’ this year. However, for Thyroid Awareness Week being observed from 22 to 28 May, Thyroid Federation International has announced the theme, “It’s Not You. This is your thyroid.” The theme focused on ensuring that people understand the most common symptoms of thyroid disorders and take necessary steps to correct them.
